Getting Tattooed While Visiting San Diego: What to Know…
Getting Tattooed in San Diego: What to Know (Visitor’s Guide)
If you’re traveling to San Diego and planning to get tattooed while you’re here, a little preparation goes a long way. Whether you’re visiting for a beach vacation, a business conference, military travel, or a bachelor or bachelorette weekend, knowing when, where, and how to get tattooed can make the experience smoother—and help your tattoo heal properly.
This guide is built specifically for guests visiting Rose Tattoo in Point Loma, using insights from our own neighborhood recommendations and personal advice from our artists.
Why Get Tattooed While Visiting San Diego?
San Diego has long been tied to maritime, military, and travel culture—three influences deeply connected to tattoo history. Our shop is located in the historic Roseville area of Point Loma, one of the oldest settled parts of the peninsula, originally laid out in 1866 by pioneer Louis Rose and later becoming the heart of the Tuna fishing industry
Today, the neighborhood blends that heritage with an active waterfront lifestyle just minutes from San Diego Bay and Shelter Island.
At Rose Tattoo, we focus on traditional tattooing with a wide range of styles—from single-needle and blackwork to American traditional—while maintaining a welcoming, professional environment for both locals and travelers.
Location Matters: Close to the Airport, Hotels & Waterfront
Rose Tattoo is located at 1057 Rosecrans St in Point Loma, making it highly accessible for travelers staying near the airport, Shelter Island, Downtown, or one of our beach towns like Ocean Beach or Pacific Beach
For visitors flying in and out of San Diego International Airport, nearby neighborhoods like Liberty Station, Sunset Cliffs, Ocean Beach, Midway Sports Arena, and Shelter Island are commonly recommended because they allow you to stay close to the airport without relying heavily on freeway travel.
Where to Stay When Visiting San Diego (and Planning a Tattoo)
Many visitors to Rose Tattoo stay at waterfront hotels on Shelter Island, which combine relaxation with quick access to Point Loma.
Humphreys Half Moon Inn, Kona Kai, the Bay Club, Best Western Plus Island Palms

Corporate retreats and conferences
Military families visiting nearby bases

Things to Do Before (or After) Your Appointment
If you’re visiting with friends or family—or just need to fill time around your tattoo session—Point Loma offers a relaxed alternative to downtown crowds.
Some of our favorite local spots include:
Northside Shack, now rebranded as Surf Bowl Co. – Known for açaí bowls and smoothies to start the day.
Coronado Coffee and Junos offer great coffee and quick breakfast items.
La Perla #3 has the best, and now social media famous, burritos. Voted as some of the best in California
These spots plus so much more in the neighborhood make it easy to grab breakfast, meet friends, or relax while someone else is getting tattooed.

Planning Around Beaches, Sun & Outdoor Activities
San Diego visitors naturally want to spend time outdoors—but this can affect tattoo healing.
Important Tip:
If your trip includes beaches, surfing, hiking, or boating, plan your tattoo at the end of your visit.
Fresh tattoos should not be exposed to:
Direct sun
Ocean or pool water for at least 2 weeks after the tattoo is completed
Sand, sweat, or friction
Scheduling your tattoo on your final day allows you to fully enjoy San Diego’s outdoor lifestyle first—then travel home to heal properly.
Visiting for a Conference, Military Travel, or Short Stay?
Shelter Island hotels and nearby venues host meetings, retreats, and corporate events, with flexible indoor and outdoor spaces designed for professional gatherings.
That makes Rose Tattoo a convenient stop for:
Conference attendees with free evenings
Military personnel on leave or relocation
Business travelers wanting a meaningful souvenir of their time in San Diego
Because we’re located outside the dense downtown core, clients often find the experience more relaxed and personal.
Walk-Ins, Appointments & Travel Timing
Tattoo availability varies by shop, and many studios recommend contacting them directly and confirming hours or walk-in options before visiting. We try our best to accommodate everyone but if you had a specific artist in mind, some of our artists are scheduled anywhere from a couple days to a couple month booked out. Scheduling in advance is always recommended to make sure your tattoo is booked with the artist best suited
Best practice when traveling:
Reach out in advance to reserve time
Send reference ideas before arrival
Plan around your flight schedule
Allow extra time so you’re not rushing post-tattoo
Final Travel Tip: Make the Tattoo Part of the Memory
San Diego is known for experiences—concerts by the water, coastal views, neighborhood cafés, and time spent outdoors. Pairing your visit with a tattoo can turn the trip into something permanent and meaningful.
Just remember:
Enjoy the sun first. Get tattooed last. Heal smart.
